GIST Initiative and Amazon Web Services Formalize Partnership to Support STEM Founders

January 31, 2019

The U.S Department of State’s Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) Initiative and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are celebrating their inaugural year of partnership with a signing ceremony on Friday, December 21, 2018. The ceremony formalizes a successful year of partnership between GIST and AWS, and highlights the commitment by both GIST and AWS to promote entrepreneurship and economic stability around the world.

Over the last year, AWS has worked with GIST to support science and technology innovation by more than 800 young entrepreneurs in more than 130 emerging economies globally. Through GIST, AWS has awarded more than $1 million USD in startup resources to young entrepreneurs, creating opportunities for young people to solve global challenges in their communities.

GIST entrepreneurs have used AWS products to provide solutions to India’s energy crisis, create medical devices that help patients with epilepsy and PTSD, and create modern financial services accessible to people with limited finances.

AWS provides on-demand cloud computing platforms to individuals, companies and governments.  Supporting innovation and entrepreneurship is at the core of the AWS mission, with the premise that cloud computing is a powerful tool to enable startups and individuals to experiment and solve critical problems more quickly and at a larger scale than ever before.  AWS has several programs to help early stage businesses launch and scale their tech or technology-enabled ventures.  Benefits of these programs include promotional AWS credits, coaching and mentorship, as well as technical assistance.

The GIST Initiative is the U.S. Department of States flagship science and technology entrepreneurship program. Through online programs, in-country trainings, and pitch competitions, GIST has helped young people become engines of prosperity in 137 emerging economies around the world.
