December 4, 2019

Global Entrepreneurship Week 2019 was one for the books. Between November 18 and 24, over 10 million people from 170+ countries participated in 35,000 events. GIST held several online and in-person events in honor of Global Entrepreneurship Week.

Here’s a recap of our events to support global innovators and entrepreneurs:

GIST Impact Report

We released the first-ever GIST Impact Report to highlight the key accomplishments of the initiative to date. The easy-to-read report provides a deeper look into how the GIST initiative positively impacts the lives of entrepreneurs, investors, and American businesses. The report includes profiles of GIST-supported science and technology startups who have gone on to generate over $250 million in revenue. It also highlights the benefits of GIST-facilitated partnerships with global entrepreneurs and American businesses.

You're welcome to download the full report and share it with your network. Be sure to tag GIST Network on Facebook and Twitter, and use the hashtag #GISTNetwork.

GIST TechConnect: Global Investment Trends and Best Practices

We held a live TechConnect, Global Investment Trends and Best Practices, during the GIST Investors Forum convening in Washington, D.C. at The Halcyon Incubator. The TechConnect gave the global GIST network of entrepreneurs—including the GIST Business Incubation startups in Washington D.C.—an opportunity to ask the panel of experts questions about key trends and best practices related to angel investment across the globe.

The panelists included:

  • Eli Velasquez (Moderator): Director of Venture Development at VentureWell
  • Patrick Gouhin: CEO of the Angel Capital Association
  • Tarek El Kady: Entrepreneur and angel investor in Alexandria, Egypt, and chairman of both the Alexandria Business Angel Network (Alex Angels) and the Mediterranean Business Angel Investment Network (MED Angels)
  • Caroline Bressan: Director of Social Investments of Open Road Alliance

You can watch the TechConnect recording here.

GIST Investors Forum

The GIST Investors Forum was a two day-long, roundtable discussion about global investment best practices and network building. Participants had an opportunity to share their global investment experiences and discuss needs and gaps for investors in startup ecosystems in emerging economies. The roundtable discussion was led by Patrick Gouhin, CEO of the Angel Capital Association. He led sessions on angel investment trends, growth opportunities for the U.S. angel community, and added valuable insight into best practices for network building and management. Representatives from five of the six GIST Investor countries were in attendance: Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, and Vietnam.

GIST Business Incubation Showcase and Reception

Nearly 30 science and technology entrepreneurs from emerging economies concluded their participation in the new GIST Business Incubation program during the GIST Business Incubation Showcase and Reception held on November 21 at The Halcyon Incubator in Washington, D.C. The energy during the event was electric. From inspiring presentations to moving pitches from startups, the event concluded a successful launch of the new program. Read this article for a highlight of the event, and this article for a behind-the-scenes look at the GIST Business Incubation program.

GIST is proud to participate in Global Entrepreneurship Week, an initiative that recognizes diversity is a driver of innovation. The GIST Initiative will continue to support startups in emerging economies and connect the American business community with leading global entrepreneurs and innovators.
