Poultry Farmers Management Systems

The current and future global population growth is driving up and, our demand for a protein required to feed humanity has placed, livestock producers under pressure to increase production, but reoccurring disease outbreaks and lack of access to readily available markets devastate the economies of millions of farmer’s especially rural women and youths who are 60% of Africa’s workforce.

Henry lost almost all of his chicken within as little as one day because of a disease and the vet not arriving in time, he later surveyed 126 farmers in his locality. The survey confirms the two most common challenges amongst poultry farmers were chicken mortality due to diseases and access to markets for their ready products  https://bit.ly/3clljZA

Research on Cameroon's production and the number of farmers, Prodel https://bit.ly/2W6ixyD  confirms that Cameroon's current production deficit is 98,000 tons of chickens, equivalent to 24 million birds with over 80 percent of her farmers are in small scale production.

Backyard poultry in the United States is continuously rising with an increased concern of many diseases, creating a threat of disease prevalence nationwide. The Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation https://bit.ly/3qXJTUo surveyed eight states and confirms the cause of mortality in backyard poultry is due to diseases.

FAO https://bit.ly/3gOAJoi also confirms that the overall slowdown in poultry meat and egg production worldwide is due to animal diseases and lack of better technology to improve productivity sustainably, whereas poultry is raised by approximately 80% of rural households In developing countries.

I think it’s clear how huge this issue is. COVID 19 has shown us that viruses can spread faster than we can react. The virus started spreading in one country, and then it goes to the next, another one, and all of a sudden, we have it everywhere in the world. We are tackling a problem here in Cameroon, but if you think about it, it affects you regardless of whether you’re from the Netherlands, Malaysia, the United States, or any other country in the world.

In Summary:

Too many chickens die on the farms because of viral diseases. There are not enough veterinarians and they have to travel from farm to farm which is time-consuming. By doing that they carry viruses with them and spread diseases instead of treating them.

No easy way exists in connecting farmers with ready markets and the entire value chain in real-time

SOLUTION

To perform a diagnostic, poultry producer takes a photo of an infected chicken or feces, with the aid of Artificial Intelligence built with ethical considerations in deployment and design, recognize, translate into speech together with machine learning algorithms that continuously learn from the data while Big Data train the learning algorithms to increase performance. As per the image recognition translated in speech, it will then provide the diagnosed results together with friendly treatment advice and recommend consulting a Vet with more than 95% accuracy and the diagnosis goes back to the farmer.

Right now it can recognize 11 diseases that are common in poultry which represents 70% of the total poultry diseases, such as salmonella and avian influenza. They can also use the Veterinarian On-demand assistance for consultation. With the rise of COVID 19 and other Zoonotic diseases, we quickly added automatic geo-tagging to immediately pinpoint the exact location of the farmer sending the diagnostic so that in the case of an escalating situation, we can inform governments to take adequate measures. This is very important as we work for a traceable and transparent food system.

The technology brings a massive change to the industry and will not only benefit Cameroon but would be rolled out to other developing countries, especially for low and middle-income countries. (Innovation SDG #9)

The Cameroon market is only just the beginning for the PFMS team, as they hope to enter into global poultry markets and expand the app to recognize cow and pig diseases in the future as well. Innovations like PFMS’ have great potential to help transform the meat industry to become more trustworthy for consumers and provide stable livelihoods for livestock farmers.
