The GIST initiative’s goal of empowering science and technology innovators in over 130 emerging economies marked two more successes for its members this past week. Two GIST Business Incubation alumni were recognized for their achievements in the health industry. 

iCardy’s Alyona Glushko, a participant in this past year’s inaugural GIST Business Incubation cohort, was presented the Award of the President of Ukraine for Young Scientists in 2019. iCardy is developing a product that detects hidden atrial fibrillation in real time without the internet, detecting AFib more quickly than other products, with an accuracy rate greater than 99%. Glushko spent three weeks this past fall with the Center for Entrepreneurial Innovation in Phoenix, AZ, a full-service business incubator that houses a vibrant community of bioscience, medical device, and high tech entrepreneurs who are working on industry-changing technologies.

Meanwhile in Dubai, Syed Abrar Ahmed, founder of AzaadHealth and GIST Catalyst’s 2019 Outstanding Entrepreneur from an Emerging Economy, has taken home the top prize at this year's Step Conference. 

Over 8000 people attended with some 400 eager startups showcasing their innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing issues. 

“STEP Conference 2020 provided us with the much needed exposure and coverage which allowed us to get in contact with the healthcare decision makers in UAE,” Ahmed explained. “We have received tremendous support from In5 Dubai and Dubai Internet City and it’s always a great experience to work with them. We are absolutely sure that by collaborating together, we will disrupt the digital health space not only in the Middle East but also the World.”

Ahmed was quick to point out the role that the GIST initiative has played in his startup’s successes. 

“We would not have made it this far if it wasn't for GIST,” he stated. “Being part of GIST has provided us with the resources and connections to take our startup to the next level. We now have the validation and means to make a real positive difference in the lives of our patients. All thanks to GIST!”
