Janko Ecobicicletas

The innovation we propose are bicycles made with bamboo (Phyllostachys aurea), which grows naturally in Peruvian forests and is a natural resource unused with a ver interesting industrial potential in several sectors (food, construction, clothing, agricukture, etc). The JANKO bikes are currently sold on Facebook and are developed and built by the team leader Víctor Barraza in his home-workshop located in Lima,  Peru.  JANKO have developed 03 bikes prototypes, fixie, MTB and "road" models. All these models are lighter than any aluminum bike in the market and with less carbon footprint. The bike frames are 70% bamboo made of bamboo, which is equivalent to the structural framework to which the other parts and accessories (wheels, chain, rudder, brakes, etc.) are assembled to the client's taste. It results in a light, flexible bicycle, resistant to oxidation and corrosion so frequent the tropical countries. Our product has excellence in design due to its very fine finish in each piece and joint, which are hand-maded. In addition, each bicycle can be customized with the laser engraving on the surface of the bamboo cane with a logo or name as we have been doing by engraving the company's logo. Our bicycles have a technological research component of their own that currently participates in the in the process of being patented. The patent pending is the system of cold welding joints used to join the pieces of bamboo and these with other metals, this system allows us to join up to 6 elements in structural joints. This system represents a great opportunity for the construction of other prototypes of bicycles that are also requested by our customers, such as children's bikes and tricycles. These unions can also be customized with odifferent colors and textures. Janko Ecobicicletas was awarded with the BIOINCUBA Funs by the Ministry of Productiobn of Peru and it is currently implementing its bussiness plan as follows: 1. A marketing campaign that positions the brand and accelerates the sales of the products. 2. Validate the structural strength of the bicycles with a university to enter to more competitive markets. 3. Develop the new design of "ride bicycles" very requested by the customers and finally 4. Strengthen the chain of our bamboo producers to ensure the provision of long-term material and allow us an environmental certification and fair trade. JANKO means, in the Ashaninka language, "cane", buys the bamboos produced by farmers in the Peruvian jungle, such as Satipo, Oxapampa (in the Ashaninca-Yanesha Reserve), many of them from native communities. Our vision is to be able to buy more bamboos and to be able to sustain the productive chain in the long term with training and hiring new labor for our production. This relationship and promotion of the productive chain of the cultivation and extraction of Peruvian bamboo also gives us an environmental and social competitive advantage that none of the imported bicycles of iron, aluminum and carbon fiber has. Bamboo forests are an excellent option in the rehabilitation of degraded forests, afforestation and reforestation and generation of biomass (it  provides "timber" in 4 to 5 years, unlike timber trees that take at least 10 years). These forests also allow carbon sequestration , prevention of erosion and protection of water sources due to its root system that forms compact networks under the soil. With the commercialization of the bamboo bicycles, JANKO will be able to put in value the bamboo resource also providing incomes and job opportunities to farmers, transportists, and artisans in Lima and provinces to which Janko will enter. A quick note about the bamboo and its relation with Peru and its historty: bamboo is a forest resources that have been present in the history of Peruvian construction for hundreds of years. It can be found in the archaeological remains such as Caral and other pre-Inca cultures, reached its highest peak in construction during the Viceroyalty with its mandatory use in buildings forming part of the "quincha" that allowed the construction of earthquake-resistant buildings that still we can appreciate in places like the center of Lima. According to the National Plan for the Promotion of Bamboo 2008-2020 of the Ministry of Agriculture of Peru, there are approximately 50 to 56 species of bamboos concentrated mainly between 2000 - 3000 meters above sea level. Despite its strong links with the Periuvian history and its several uses, the bamboo resources  have been deployed and considered as a "timber  for the poors". JANKO, thorugh the experience of its team members, local farmers and its customers, is looking to find solutions to the some of the problems for local transportation and pollution in the cities, and providing fair incomes, develop capacities and bring opportunities for development to several forest communities in the rural areas of Peru. Finally, JANKO represent the mix of a technology-based start-uo and a company with social purpose, having these two approaches a real impact in the whole value chain, from the farmers to our JANKO Bikes riders.
